Surviving Try-Outs: Countdown: 1 Day
It's your first chance to perform...
Here's how to make the most of it.
Evaluation Camps aren't for players, they're for coaches. They're to help identify specific talents, and specific attitudes, that can help a coach choose the team he/she wants, whether it's for a house league, a rep team, or for all-stars.
These suggestions may help you approach the process with a positive attitide and show yourself in a good light.

On evaluation day...

  • Wake up early - early enough for a good breakfast and a brisk early morning walk or jog - to get yourself in a positive frame of mind. You can do this.
  • Arrive early - at least 1/2 hour before you were told to, even earlier if you can - to get comfortable before all the other players arrive. You want to feel like you 'own' the place!
  • Do a field check (like your team should before every game) - to see where bad hops might happen, or cleats could trip you up. Get to know the distance from baseline to fence - whether there's a warning track or not. Judge both the running steps and the sliding distance you have to work with.
  • Remember your mechanics. The biggest failure of many players during tryouts is to have routine practices in batting cages, etc., in the off-season, where they're nice and relaxed with no pressure, then freeze up or fall back on bad habits when the pressure is on. What you're looking for is measured footwork, an efficient swing, full throwing extension.
  • Prepare to wait. In early Spring coaches may have a lot of players to look at, and the process will take time. Use the time while waiting while your shot at bat or your turn on fly balls to see how you can handle it best.
  • All or nothing. If evaluations in your league go on for more than one day, you still need to make a good impression right away, and on every opportunity. That doesn't mean push to hard, it means enjoy each chance and do everything you've trained to do.
