The original question (see side note): To help teach hitters how to read a pitcher's breaking ball, many coaches have suggested painting a baseball. But the wuaetion posed by a WebBall visitor was how? Which way should the two-tone go?
The options were...
- straight across all four seams
- across two seams
- leave it alone (no paint), or
- along the seams

It was the fourth choice - as shown here - that was the almost unanimous recommendation.

The comment that best summed it up came from James Hattenstein who has since contributed

A breaking ball is usually thrown from the seams. If the ball is colored between the two seams that rotate down or sideways, the hitter can learn the proper reaction to an offspeed pitch without being surprised. It also trains the eyes to focus in on the portion of the ball that is the axis of rotation.
